The Vague Large Thing has germinated and is growing a plot; it promises to be at least the length of its predecessor.  I've written the first draft of the prologue and am currently deep in R&D, which is wonderful as I have something of an obsessive love of research.  Some details have been ironed out as far as setting goes: those of you interested in the 'where' of most of the story are welcome to have a look here.

I'm putting the sonnet (Chase's PoV, by the way) under a cut, as interpreting it will give away one or two plot details.  Anyone who wants to comment with a guess is more than welcome to do so.

Lessons
He’s grasping at the shades of things unseen:
In ancient trees, in spells, in words unsaid.
A canopy of all-embracing green
Now shelters him as it did one long dead.
Her footsteps echo here; she touched this place
(For why else would her sisters turn away?
In each, partial reflections of her face—)
Sometimes it almost hurts too much to stay.
He walks the balance between dark and light:
Magic that harms and that which heals in turns.
Her presence fills his days, and then at night
He tries to reconcile what he learns.
He knows how to adapt and how to bend,
And where disparate worlds can meet and blend.

Thanks so much! This is definitely going to be one of my most complex pieces to date, but I know I'm going to enjoy it immensely. Hopefully, I can give the Australian rainforest as much life and detail as you did Antarctica in that one fic (magnificently done). Oh, and thank you again for the beautiful poems in your LJ: they inspired me into a sonnet-writing mood.
